Managing horses with laminitis is not just hard — it’s relentless.

It can be physically and emotionally exhausting, and it never really seems to stop.

If you know the stress of trying to balance movement, grazing — timing when grass is safest — doing the very best for your horse’s welfare (including their mental health), and the best for pasture management,  you’ll understand why this has been such a game-changer for me.

The Batt-Latch automatic gate opener has quite literally been life-saving in how I manage my horses.

My horses are calmer, happier, and getting more movement — without me having to be physically present at all hours of the day and night.

Here’s how I use it:

I set the gate to open at 3am, when grass is safest, allowing the horses to go out and graze.

This means I can utilise the pasture I have available, by feeding more of it when it’s safer to graze,  thereby reducing hay costs.

I then bring the herd back into their loafing area, where they have hay, water, and shade — early, mid, or late morning, depending on how strict their management needs to be.

Because they’ve already been moving and grazing, they’re warmed up, settled, and have a full belly — which means they’re happy and ready to ride early.

Depending on what’s appropriate for each individual horse, I can also set the gate to open again in the early evening (when suitable), allowing for a short, controlled graze, gentle movement, and important mental health support before coming in for the night.

The system is:

  • Lightweight
    • Portable
    • Solar-powered
    • Programmable with multiple time settings

It’s taken enormous pressure off me and has made managing my herds far easier, more sustainable, and financially more manageable — while still putting the horses’ welfare first. They are happier because they get to be out and moving more, in a way that truly supports their health.

Honestly — it’s been a total game changer.

If you have questions I am happy to answer what I can from my experiences with using them. I have been using them for about 4 years now and have a couple of them to manage different herds.
